#16 All time highs, Passive Income, Starbucks, Yahoo & Some Life Lessons
I write the newsletter for a selfish reason. It makes me sit for a few hours, read things people have written from various sources, and share them with you. I wouldn’t read anything if I wasn’t sending the newsletter at all. Another thing that keeps me motivated is the cup of coffee that you buy for me -:)
📈 How Bad Are All Time Highs?
A week passes by quite quickly. The pace at which Indian equity markets are moving up is even faster. Such up moves are not good in my opinion. Markets at all time highs is not a bad thing. Its good. Markets are supposed to go up in the long run. Don’t believe me? Look at the data.
💸 Why I Love Passive Income?
I love to read stories where people have benefited from an investment made decades earlier. A few weeks back, I shared how the investors in Coca Cola are raking in dividends in multiples of their investment. Another story that I came across this week is of none other than Charlie Munger who is getting annual royalties between $70,000-$100,000 from an investment of $1,000 only :)
☕ Skepticism And The Growth Of Starbucks In India
Did you know that Starbucks has surpassed 1,000 cr revenues in India (a little more than $130 million). Most people where skeptical about the success of Starbucks in India. However, here we are. How it grows from here is something to think about. The rise in the number of stores and its profitability will have a direct impact on the already expensive Tata Consumers Limited.
🥠 Can One Get More Unlucky Than Yahoo?
Did you know that yahoo refused to buy google because of valuations? They even got opportunity to buy Facebook and once had an offer from Microsoft too. They missed out everything, almost always because of valuations. Their fortunes would’ve changed if any one of the transactions had gone through.
🌱 Some Really Good Life Lessons
I love reading lists. Especially when they have precious life lessons. This time, its from Nat Eliason. Here are some of my favourites -
You have more time to build a career than a family. You can complete great work well into your 80s and 90s. If you want to know your grandkids as adults, you only have until your mid 30s to start a family. Every year you spend waiting is another year you lose with your future family.
Get in shape. It’s not enough to not be fat, you need to be strong and have endurance too. Find a form of exercise you enjoy doing. Focus more on increasing your physical capacity than on losing weight, the weight loss will follow if you’re getting better at running, swimming, lifting, etc.
Standing events are the best way to regularly see friends. Constantly having to schedule outings, dinners, etc. makes it hard to regularly see people. Create standing events. Invite people you want to spend more time with. It’s the easiest way to get more friend time in your week.
The time will pass anyway. Maybe it’ll take you five or ten years to succeed at whatever you want to do. Well, those ten years will pass anyway. In ten years you can either have made progress on your goals, or still be whining about how long things take.
Get physical. Buy real books. Print photos. Write cards. Buy vinyl. Space is how you show yourself and others what you value. Minimalism is a horrible, dull trend. Fill your life with totems to what you care about.
