Hi everyone. Yes, I am back. I know you’re wondering for how long. We will see that. I noticed that I have not been reading much and this newsletter is the best way to make that a habit. Lets begin :)
Earlier this week, I wrote about why long term does not have an end date. Since I am in the business of helping people with their personal finances, I often get asked this question “For how many years should I invest?”. If you to create wealth or do good things in your life, you need to continuously iterate. There is no death date.
Value Your Time
Earning high rate of returns will create tremendous value for you. However, it has a cost. A couple of thoughts I shared on twitter -
Someone Said Bitcoin Cannot Be Stolen?
A fascinating story about how someone who stole bitcoin in his early days fell in his own trap. Jimmy Zhong files a complaint for theft of his bitcoin but the story turns out to be completely different.
The Relationship of Ben Graham and Warren Buffet
You ought to know who Ben Graham was. If you don’t, this one will give you some insights about who he was. Hint - he was Buffets early mentors and the author of one of the most popular books on investing “The intelligent investor”.
When I worked with him,” Mr. Buffett continued, “Ben told me: ‘Don’t worry too much about making money. It will change how your wife lives but not how you live.’” Mr. Buffett laughed gleefully. With a jovial smile, he remembered Grandpa Ben’s advice to him: “‘You and I will still wear the same clothes and eat at the same cafeteria, so relax.‘”
A Documentary Worth Watching!
Gold mining, how has it impacted the global economy and the people who have worked in the mining industry, why does gold hold so much value, and much more. I enjoyed every minute of this documentary.
Some Things About Spending Money
Everyone teaches us how to save money. No one talks about spending money. I wrote a little something about it.
Retiring In 40’s
It’s important to be financially free. It helps you find time to do things that don’t make money. We totally enjoy helping our clients achieve such dreams. Here is a video of one of prominent folks from the mutual fund industry who retired in his 40’s and pursuing his passion of sprinting. He wants to run for India some day. The biggest lesson is that one must retire with a plan. A retirement without a plan will bore you very quickly. Another reason I like this video is that Karan also loves watches. An area where I have started taking some interest off late.
Megatrends In India
You may have heard that India’s time has come but must be wondering what’s happening in the country that everyone is talking about it?
Are You A Quality Shareholder
Most people want the fastest growth in their investee companies so that they can see the share prices grow up quickly too. A quality share holder does not.
I’d like to quote Warren Buffett, and unlike Third Point, to spell his name correctly when doing so. Mr. Buffett serves as Chairman and CEO of our largest holding, and wisely professed, “Nobody wants to get rich slow.” The Walt Disney Company has a long history of making its long-term shareholders quite rich, and they did it slowly. It seems Mr. Disney and the folks managing the business over the years understood Aesop and the benefit of being the tortoise, not the hare.
I guess I will stop here. Thank you for reading this letter. I hope it adds value. I am writing this so that I continue to read and find new things. Its for my own interest :)
